The Great outdoors

More to do than time to spare

The guide-books dwell on the area s outstanding natural beauty and attributes, but the list of recommendations is much longer and more varied.

The adjoining bays of Mevagissey and St Austell provide near perfect conditions for the dinghy sailor and windsurfer, whilst nearby Fowey harbour lends itself to competition, climaxing in the week long Royal Regatta at the end of August.

Away from the water, there are four 18 hole golf courses at Lostwithiel, St Austell , Carlyon Bay and  Porthpean to test your skills, whilst every major centre has its public tennis courts.

For those who enjoy walking there is an enviable choice. Stroll along the lovely river and woodland walks or head for the coastal paths with their outstanding views and ever-changing landscape of coves, cliffs and creeks. Walk overland along the Saints Way, an ancient coast to coast route, which crosses the county between Fowey and Padstow. Alternatively explore the area on horse-back along miles of bridleway with riding lessons and pony trekking readily available, or discover Daphne du Maurier's Cornwall which begins at Bodinnick where "The Loving Spirit" was written.

There is also a wide range of cultural centres, theme parks and attractions within easy reach, making this Heart of Cornwall an ideal base for touring and sightseeing. Popular places to visit include:

The Lost Gardens of Heligan near Mevagissey;  The world famous Eden Project at Bodelva; The Wheal Martyn Museum of the china clay industry and Polkyth Leisure Centre both at St Austell; St Mawes Castle, St Just in Roseland Church and the Roundhouses at Veryan are all situated within the Roseland Peninsula;

Newquay Zoo (wildlife and conservation centre), Waterworld with its covered fun pool and 25m swimming pool, and the Blue Reef Aquarium at Newquay; Bodmin and Wenford Railway providing a chance to explore some of Cornwall s finest countryside from a steam-hauled branch line train; Dobwalls Family Adventure Park near Liskeard, with its unique forest railroad; Flambards Village Theme Park at Helston with over 30 attractions and rides for all the family and, for an exceptional day and evening out, a trip to Land s End to see the multi-sensory Last Labyrinth show followed by theatre on the cliffs at The Minack, with the ocean as backdrop.
